Did you know that the name Basil is said to derive from Greek "basilikos".  This translates to  "Herb worthy of a King".  The Ancient Greeks basilisk believed the Basilisk to be a half-lizard/half dragon creature with a fatal stare and the basil  The basil plant was known to be THE CURE against the look, breath and the bite of the basilisk!  Sicilians believed basil to be a symbol of hate and then it became the symbol of love. Esoterically, the Basil plant is associated with money and abundance. For this effect, you would inhale basil or eat a leaf while visualizing money flowing into your pockets and bank account. Traditionally, Basil has been used to treat scorpion stings.  It was believed that scorpions could be produced by crushing Basil leaves between two stones.

 

Nicholas Culpeper was an English herbalist who claimed Basil would cure scorpion and bee stings while others of his time insisted that Basil caused scorpions to grow in the brain - 'Being applied to the place bitten by venomous beasts, or stung by a wasp or hornet, it speedily draws the poison to it. - Every like draws its like. Mizaldus affirms, that being laid to rot in horse-dung, it will breed venomous beasts. Hilarius, a French physician, affirms upon his own knowledge, that an acquaintance of his, by common smelling to it, had a scorpion breed in his brain.'  (Culpeper, 1985)
