This Frankincense is Boswellia frereana. This particular species of Frankincense is known as Maydi and is often referred to as the King of all Frankincenses. It comes from the mountainous regions of northern Somalia, as does Boswellia carterii.
We offer three different Frankincense essential oils:
- Boswellia frereana - Bold, deep and a bit citrusy (lemony) aroma
- Boswellia carterii - Light, crisp and soft aroma
- Boswellia sacra - Sweet, light, almost floral aroma
Frankincense essential oils and abstracts are extracted from Frankincense resin. The resins such as frankincense are known as sacred substances among many ancient and modern cultures. To us, frankincense is a representation of light in an energetic manner. Frankincense trees grow in regions of the world that are extremely dry and experience intense sunlight. Frankincense is harvested from Somalia or Oman.
The way Frankincense is harvested is the Frankincense is tapped from Boswellia trees by slashing the bark (which is called striping) and allowing the resin to bleed out and harden. The resin then hardens and forms what is referred to as tears. The tears are the blood of the frankincense tree. The ancients refer to these tears as crystallized drops of sunlight.
Frankincense is wonderful for protection and cleansing of the auric (energetic) field. It is protective, purifying, and grounding all at the same time which is why it is wonderful for meditation and sacred ceremonies. On the physical level frankincense essential oil is very effective for headaches when combined with Palo Santo and Peppermint essential oisl. It is a great respiratory aid and also effective for skin and scarring.
There are several species and varieties of Frankincense trees, each producing a slightly different type of resin and essential oil. Differences in soil and climate create even more diversity of the resin, even within the same species.
In general all Frankincense essential oils have many, many benefits to offer.
It is wonderful for the skin. This essential oil is both cicatrisant and cytophylactic. It is skin healing and effective on boils, acne and scarring on the skin as well as to assist stretch marks to fade. Try using it in a facial cream for wrinkles too.
Great for digestive issues. Frankincense speeds up the secretion of digestive juices and facilitates peristaltic motion. It is also a carminative giving relief from gas and indigestion.

Frankincense essential oil generally is high in monoterpenes. In general monoterpene rich oils are mild antiseptics, decongestants for the respiratory and the muscular system (depends on the specific monoterpene). They are also rubefacients and many monoterpene rich oils provide an analgesic effect where muscle pain and stiffness are present, this particular monoterpene oil is anti inflammatory, have a mild antibacterial effect, all are highly lipophilic and therefore penetrate the tissues of the body easily aka penetration enhancers and they are effective airborne deodorizers and purifiers.
This batch of Boswellia frereana has approximately 58% alpha thuyene, 6% delta sabinene and 14% para cymene. Para cymene is antiviral, analgesic and antibacterial. While there is not much documented research on alpha thuyene. What is interesting is that alpha thuyene and sabinene are double bod isomers of one another. Sabinene is found in black pepper and is a major constituent of carrot seed essential oil.
