Botany
Cananga odorata, commonly known as ylang-ylang, is a tropical tree native to the rainforests of countries such as India, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and parts of Australia. The tree is part of the Annonaceae family.
- Size: The tree can grow up to 20 meters (about 60 feet) tall. It has a grey, furrowed trunk that can reach a diameter of about 50 cm (approximately 20 inches).
- Leaves: Its leaves are evergreen, elongated, and glossy, with a pointed tip and broad base. They usually grow directly across from each other in an alternate pattern.
- Flowers: The flowers of Cananga odorata are drooping, long-stalked, with six narrow, greenish-yellow (sometimes pink) petals, like a starfish. They exude a powerful and unique scent, which is most intense in the early morning. The flowers are the source of ylang-ylang essential oil.
- Fruit: The fruit is a black, oval drupe that contains several seeds.
The tree requires a hot, humid, and tropical climate to thrive, ideally with an evenly distributed annual rainfall. The tree begins to flower each year after its fifth year. The flowers are handpicked for the extraction of ylang-ylang essential oil.

- Linalool: This compound is known for its calming and relaxing effects.
- Geranyl Acetate: This compound has floral notes and contributes to the overall scent of ylang ylang.
- Caryophyllene: This sesquiterpene is often associated with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
- P-Cresyl Methyl Ether: This compound contributes to the strong, floral, and slightly fruity aroma of ylang ylang.
- Methyl Benzoate: This ester has a sweet, slightly fruity scent, contributing to ylang ylang's aroma.
- Benzyl Acetate: This compound is common in floral fragrances and contributes to the aroma of ylang ylang.
- Farnesene: This sesquiterpene is common in essential oils and contributes to their scent.
- Benzyl Benzoate: This compound has sweet, balsamic, and slightly spicy notes and contributes to the aroma of ylang ylang.
- Germacrene-D: This is a sesquiterpene that contributes to the scent of ylang ylang.
The alcohol and ester content (quantity varies depending on the specific batch of oil) contributes to the antidepressant and general nervous system tonic effects of Ylang Ylang. The alcohols and the sesquiterpenes may be the components that contribute to the oil's hypotensive qualities (lowers blood pressure). It is interesting to compare the esters in Ylang Ylang with the esters in Jasmine—there are many similar ones. Benzyl benzoate can sometimes cause skin irritation.
